  1. Returning to New Orleans for the fourth time was very powerful, both joyful and sad. It was sobering to drive through areas where there were still X’s on the houses from the initial search and rescue teams post-Katrina, especially noting how long it took for them to go into homes. Many houses had dates 2.5 weeks after the storm, like 9-17-05, way too late to save any lives. While this is evidence of how poorly prepared the government was for such a disaster, it is also tragic, and a sign of how little the lives of some people are valued.

On the other hand, getting to work on Estelle’s house for 4 days was great, sanding and cleaning. Michael’s saxophone playing and leading us in singing Amazing Grace at the house dedication on Friday made the event even more special. I felt honored when Estelle came to hug and thank me, said she was trying not to cry, then burst into tears in my arms when I told her there are some occasions when crying is perfectly appropriate. It is a blessing to be welcomed into her life and the lives of many other people.

I look forward to returning in 2012.
